The PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative is working with GlaxoSmithKline on a vaccine called RTS,S. It has been tested on 15,000 children in 11 African clinical trial sites. Half of the children were ages 6 to 12 weeks. The remainder were 5 to 17 months. This was a blind study with 50% receiving a placebo injection. The results – 56% fewer cases of malaria in the older group, 31% fewer cases in the younger group. This is encouraging news.
